When my 33-year marriage ended, I packed a bag and drove — Melbourne to Brisbane and back. Seven weeks. Alone. Searching.
Along the way, I sought out the elder women who had gone before me. I remembered a conversation with my grandmother, Dolcie, when I was 16 — the day I left home with $200 in my pocket. Her words gave me courage then. They gave me courage again.
The doily in this work was hers. The feathers were gathered along the road — each one a small act of reclaiming freedom.
