Scars of a Woman

This is where it all began.

Scars of a Woman is the first painting in the series — the one that started everything. The background is layered with disposable medical robes from my kidney cancer scans. Once worn and discarded. Now woven into the work. Into the story.

The black and white palette reflects the starkness of those years. The textures carry the weight of the scars that so many women bear in silence; the ones the world doesn’t see and the ones it does.

For me, this painting holds my own scar. The mark left by surviving a 14cm tumour. The reality of living with one kidney. A scar that speaks not just of cancer survived, but of the resilience that came from surviving it. It also holds scars that other women carry - breast cancers, hysterectomies and caesarians. 

This is the beginning of the Scars of a Woman story.
